THESIS

Gamification and social accountability can drive collective screen-free habits

Screen Free Sunday

Problem & Solution

The average person spends more than 3 hours on their phone per day. 1 in 5 spend more than 4.5 hours every day. Weekdays average higher usage, with 52% usage occurring during work hours. $^1$

Screen addiction is real, and the ones who are addicted the most are aware of the need to reduce their screen time. People find it hard to resolve this, due to the strong psychological, and gamification hooks in modern applications.

Our bet is that a significant number of users are willing to make a commitment to use their screens less, and just need a nudge to help them reinforce that commitment.

Concept Map

Our solution acts as a text-based gamified screen time control assistance and differentiates by:

  • Autonomy - making screen time reduction up to the user’s free will
  • Offline engagement - low intrinsic failure points
  • Support - text based support to aid deaddiction and reinforce commitment
  • Ramp on and removes friction in the journey of reducing screen time and device usage

Other solutions:

  • Most other solutions rely on screen as an interface to reduce screen time, which is self defeating
  • Other solutions also rely on either a hard block, that takes away user autonomy - a key psychological driver of engagement, or they rely on a soft block that provides autonomy - but needs engagement at the point of failure
  • Mix benefit usage with non beneficial addictive usage - on a single device.
  • create more work, and thinking for user leading to even more cognitiive overload - think tracking and reflecting etc

Discovery

  1. Students and young adults: Facing increased stress and anxiety because they spend excessive time on social media comparing themselves to others, leading to feelings of inadequacy and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
  2. Parents and caregivers: Facing challenges in managing children's behavior because excessive screen time is leading to behavioral issues, lack of focus, and difficulties in setting boundaries, causing frustration and concern. A 2016 Chatelaine survey of 1,000 women between 35 and 45 years of age revealed screen time is the No. 1 cause of mom guilt.n a 2017 survey by the American non-profit Common Sense Media, 70 percent of parents said they’re concerned about the amount of time their kids spend using digital media. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children are getting an average of 7 hours per day of screen time (television, computers, phones, and other electronic devices). Yikes!
  3. Professionals in sedentary jobs (office workers, programmers, etc.): Facing physical discomfort and eye strain because prolonged screen time is causing headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and fatigue due to poor posture and lack of breaks.
  4. Individuals with sleep disturbances: Facing insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns because late-night screen exposure to blue light suppresses melatonin production, making it difficult to fall asleep and negatively impacting overall sleep quality.
  5. People experiencing social isolation: Facing loneliness and disconnection because excessive reliance on digital communication and social media has replaced meaningful face-to-face interactions, leading to feelings of isolation and alienation.
  6. Users feeling overwhelmed by information overload: Facing cognitive overload and decision fatigue because constant exposure to an overwhelming amount of information online makes it challenging to filter out relevant content and prioritize tasks effectively.
  7. Individuals with symptoms of digital addiction: Facing compulsive behavior and loss of control because excessive use of digital devices and online platforms has led to addictive patterns of behavior, causing negative impacts on mental health and daily functioning.
  8. Professionals struggling with work-life balance: Facing burnout and exhaustion because blurred boundaries between work and personal life result in constant digital connectivity, making it difficult to unwind and recharge outside of work hours, leading to increased stress and decreased well-being

Results

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
