If you feel a disconnect with the environment, type of work or your peers - chances are there's a fundamental difference in your approach to work compared to theirs. There are really 3 ways one can approach work:
a) Work as Job - primary focus is financial rewards and nature of work itself holds little interest, pleasure or fulfillment and people who view it as such may move quickly for increased pay.
b) Work as Career - advancement is key and such people are primarily motivated by prestige , power and social status. They are more likely to move if they dont get promoted..
and lastly....
c) Work as Calling - For people who view work as a calling, engagement and person-environment fit are essential as there is less seperation between work and other aspects of life. Work is a source of meaning and they’re more likely to seek roles that align with their values and offer a sense of purpose.
A calling isn’t defined by a specific type of job—it's about the personal significance an individual attaches to that type of work or environment. Even jobs traditionally seen as 'helping' roles aren't a calling for everyone.
Research suggests that third approach leads to most satisfaction which makes sense because no matter what you do - the challenge and novelty plateau at some point but this sense of alignment and purpose can provide the resilience to keep at it despite the inevitable challenges....
