Pursuit of Homogenization in Society

If every product, business model, or person online looks similar these days - it is both an extension of a much older phenomena as well as a store of opportunities.

The pursuit of homogenization has been a constant throughout human history - those with power and influence have consistently strived to shape the world according to their vision.Consider the widespread influence of the British Empire: from seemingly minor details like the width of railroads and the side of road we drive on, to grander themes in architecture and infrastructure across the globe were unified by the empire.

Over the last century, the global economic and societal development approaches were dominated by the theories and approaches of the economists from post-war america.Technology platforms have now taken up this mantle, driving homogenization. The difference lies in the scope, scale and reach. Where past influences were often a step removed from individual lives and localized/sector specific, tech platforms through their economies of scale and monopolistic tendencies are homogenizing lives, behaviors, and systems on a truly global scale, and across sectors. But we also work with a scarcity mindset valuing what is rare and devaluing what is commoditized and visible/available everywhere. As we build new products, businesses or design our lives, this is also a store of opportunities if we incorporate original thinking as to what should be rather than what is working and hopping onto the homogenization train.
